In an update, the DOH said the 63-year-old man was originally from Tarlac and was a resident of Parañaque.

The DOH added he had hypertension and died due to complications from the COVID-19 infection.

Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, May 24) — A Filipino crew member of MV Athens Bridge who was found carrying the B.1.167 coronavirus variant first detected in India has passed away, Health Undersecretary Maria Rosario Vergeire said on Monday.

The seafarer, who was confined in a hospital in Metro Manila, died on May 21 after his bout with severe COVID-19 infection.

DOH announced last week that one crew member was intubated, while three others were under oxygen support. Twelve Filipino seafarers on board the vessel that traveled to India have tested positive for COVID-19.

The Philippines has 12 cases of the B.1.167 coronavirus variant, including some patients that have no travel history from India. The entry restriction on passengers from India, Oman, United Arab Emirates, Pakistan, Nepal, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka is in place until May 31.
