Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, March 10) — The Philippine Sports Commission and the Commission on Higher Education signed a memorandum of agreement on Wednesday to elevate the country’s sports development programs in higher education institutions
Among the objectives of the PSC-CHED partnership is to maximize the two government agencies’ collaboration in forming a unified tertiary school sports development program in the country.
CHED Chairman Prospero de Vera III said the partnership will provide the highest coaching and training skills to student-athletes, coaches, and officials through professional development and continuing education.
“If you look at many of our public and private universities all over the country, the coaches of their athletic teams are basically PE teachers, they are former athletes and we can do so much to improve the caliber of coaching in universities because there are a lot of competition by developing certification systems for them so that they will be able to do their jobs better,” de Vera said.
With a three-year timeline, the joint partnership also seeks to constitute a technical working group with an end goal of producing elite athletes and coaches and delivering better health and sports programs for students and faculty.
The PSC said it expects that their partnership with CHED will pave the way for an improvement in the country’s sports development programs, which are crucial to the success of Filipino athletes on the world stage.
“By working with CHED, we can tap the resources of each tertiary schools in the country in the realms of research, planning. It will solve our problems because if we have a research system with the supervision and guidance of CHED, it can provide PSC, POC, and the whole country a quality sports program,” said PSC Chairman William Ramirez.
