Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, September 9) — A group of local chicken producers on Friday warned there might be an oversupply of poultry due to “the huge volume of imported chicken that is coming in.”
“So right now prices at farm gates are down,” United Broiler Raisers Association chairman Gregorio San Diego Jr. told CNN Philippines.
San Diego said retail prices for dressed chicken ranges from ₱150 to ₱200 per kilo, while farm gate prices are just at ₱106 to ₱110.
“At that price, we are no longer making money,” he added.
Demand for chicken products also remains low as of early September, according to San Diego.
He noted that even stalls that sell Lechon Manok — a popular dish during festivities — have not regained volume in sales.
The association already met with President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., who also heads the Department of Agriculture (DA), to raise the importation and smuggling issues as these are “killing the local industry.”
CNN Philippines is trying to reach the DA for comments.
