DFA: No Filipino casualty in Mexico quake

The Department of Foreign Affairs said on Saturday (June 6) that the Philippine Embassy in Kuala Lumpur announced that four Filipino climbers were able to reach the Kinabalu Park base safely.

Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, September 20) — The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said no Filipino was hurt in the magnitude 7.6 earthquake that hit the southwestern coast of Mexico on Monday.

“Mexico PE (Philippine Embassy) verbally informed that there are no Filipino casualties from the earthquake,” DFA spokesperson Teresita Daza said on Tuesday.

Around 1,200 Filipinos work and live in Mexico, said Daza, including 800 in the capital Mexico City.

Mexico City Mayor Claudia Sheinbaum earlier said there are no casualties or damage in her area, which is around 500 kilometers from the epicenter.

The US Geological Survey said the epicenter was in a sparsely populated region of Michoacan state, which is very near the coastline.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center issued a tsunami warning, saying waves of up to three meters could hit Mexico.
