Magnitude 5.1 quake hits Surigao del Norte

Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, August 17) — A magnitude 5.1 earthquake struck Surigao del Norte on Wednesday afternoon, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) reported.

Phivolcs said the quake happened at 5:35 p.m., with the epicenter located two kilometers southwest of the municipality of Socorro.

Instrumental Intensity I, characterized by “scarcely perceptible” shaking, was recorded in Cabadbaran City in Agusan del Norte, as well as in Surigao City in Surigao Del Norte.

Phivolcs said no damage or aftershocks are expected.

It noted the tremor had a depth of 129 kilometers and was tectonic in origin, which means it was caused by the movement in the Earth’s crust.
