Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, April 16)— President Rodrigo Duterte vowed that the government will provide new houses for families displaced by Tropical Depression “Agaton” (international name: Megi), which battered parts of the Visayas and Mindanao.
“So to all of you who lost their houses in the typhoon, you will be given a new house but it would be a long, long process and not an easy one,” the President said during his visit to Baybay City, Leyte on Friday, addressing the victims taking shelter at a school in the area.
“But government will help you resettle first,” he also said.
Duterte also expressed optimism that his successor will continue the housing program as he is set to step down from the presidency soon.
“[I]’m sure that whoever replaces — the person will push through with the program because there’s nothing else that they can do,” the chief executive noted.
“But what I can assure you is that I will help make sure that preparations will be in place to help give you new houses,” he added.
During his trip to Leyte, Duterte met with local officials to assess the damage brought by Agaton, which has left over a hundred people dead in its wake.
The President also assured residents that other forms of assistance, including food, will be given to those in need.
