(CNN Philippines, February 9) — Erik Spoelstra was named by the NBA to its list of top 15 greatest coaches in history, the league announced Wednesday.
Spoelstra started as the Heat’s video coordinator in 1995, then was promoted to assistant coach in 1997 before he was given the reins to call the shots for the South Beach-based squad.
His win-loss record as a head coach stands at 642-444 (59 percent).
Spoelstra is currently second to San Antonio Spurs’ Gregg Popovich as the longest tenured head coach in the NBA.
Miami is the top team in the Eastern Conference with a 35-20 slate as of posting time.
The Filipino-American mentor has been the head coach of Miami since 2008 and has led the Heat to five NBA finals appearances and two titles.
Also in the list are Phil Jackson, Red Auerbach, Chuck Daly, Pat Riley, Steve Kerr, Doc Rivers, and Jerry Sloan.
