Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, February 28) — President Rodrigo Duterte has appointed Vice Admiral Artemio Abu as the 29th Commandant of the Philippine Coast Guard.

A Department of Transportation statement on Monday said Abu will start his new post effective Feb. 28.

He takes over from Admiral Leopoldo Laroya, who retired this month.

Abu previously served as Commander of the PCG District Southern Visayas, PCG District Southern Tagalog, and the Coast Guard Education, Training, and Doctrine Command (CGETDC).

A member of the Philippine Military Academy Class of 1992, he was recognized as a Distinguished Cavalier Awardee for 2021 in the field of Coast Guard operation. The award is the highest recognition given to PMA alumni.
