Army officer in Cagayan de Oro shooting in stable condition

Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, February 13) — A staff sergeant critically injured after a fellow soldier opened fire in Camp Evangelista in Cagayan de Oro City is now in stable condition, the Philippine Army said on Monday.

Citing a report from its 4th Infantry Division (4ID), the army said Staff Sergeant Braulio Macalos Jr. is under close monitoring in the hospital after the shooting on Saturday.

Meanwhile, it also named the five soldiers killed, including the suspect.

The army said the victims were Sergeant Rogelio Rojo Jr. from Iligan City; Corporal Bernard Rodrigo of Cagayan de Oro City; Private First Class Prince Kevin Balaba from Maigo, Lanao del Norte; and Private Joseph Tamayo from Alegria, Surigao del Norte.

It identified the shooter as Private Johmar Villabito from Libongan, North Cotabato.

The 4ID earlier said Villabito gunned down the four others at the Service Support Battalion before he went to another barracks where he was subdued and shot by two soldiers.

The army said it would assist the soldiers’ families and is coordinating with the Philippine National Police in its investigation.
