Metro Manila, Philippines – EJ Obiena has set the new Asian Games record in men’s pole vault to secure his second straight gold medal on Tuesday, Sept. 29, at the Nagoya City Mizuho Park Athletic Stadium in Japan.
The 30-year-old Obiena cleared 5.91 meters on his first attempt, breaking his previous Asian Games record of 5.90 meters in Hangzhou, China in 2023.
Prior to the historic moment, Obiena already sealed the victory after clearing 5.75 meters.
Jie Yao and Chenyang Li of China both cleared 5.70 meters with the former taking home the silver via countback.
The Philippines now has three gold medals, three silver, and 12 bronze in the quadrennial showpiece.
