Metro Manila, Philippines – The Department of the Interior and Local Government said it will seek legislation on social media restrictions for minors in response to consistent indications that online content influenced suspects in three school shootings in recent months, a Cabinet official said.
Interior Secretary Jonvic Remulla said on Monday, Sept. 21, he will push for social media restrictions for users aged sixteen and below to protect minors from exposure to violence and online predators.
He said he will also ask for a total access ban on nihilistic websites with the assistance of the Department of Information and Communications Technology.
“Ang mga sites na ‘to ay kailangan maitigil na,” Remulla said.
[Translation: These sites should be stopped.]
In late 2025, Australia passed a law banning minors aged 16 and below from social media services, including Facebook, X, TikTok, and YouTube.
Meanwhile, the DILG chief reiterated he will call for stronger regulation on legal and loose firearms, as well as enable the police to inspect and ensure the safekeeping of all firearms in private properties.
He said it would be conducted with due notice but without the need to request a warrant.
