Metro Manila, Philippines – “Resident Evil” grossed ₱10.4 million nationwide on its opening day, marking the biggest Philippine debut in the history of the horror franchise.
The film earned ₱10,427,530 on Sept. 17, according to figures released by its local publicity team.
Its opening-day performance pushed “Insidious: Out of the Further” from the top spot after the horror film led the Philippine box office for four consecutive weeks.
The latest “Resident Evil” film is a reinvention of the video game franchise from director Zach Cregger, who previously helmed “Weapons” and “Barbarian.”
The film follows Bryan, a medical courier played by Austin Abrams, who becomes trapped in a desperate fight for survival as a horrifying night descends into chaos.
“Resident Evil” has also received positive early reviews, earning a 97 percent certified fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes.
The Wrap described it as Cregger’s best film yet and praised Abrams’ performance, while Deadline called the role a breakout moment for the actor.
Nerdist, meanwhile, praised the film’s homage to the original video games, saying it captures the experience of playing one.
Written by Cregger and Shay Hatten, the film also counts Robert Kulzer, Roy Lee, Miri Yoon, Victor Hadida, Asad Qizilbash and Carter Swan among its producers.
“Resident Evil” is now showing in Philippine cinemas, including IMAX and 4DX.
