Metro Manila, Philippines – Acclaimed director Steven Spielberg is returning to the science fiction genre with his newest film Disclosure Day, a big-budget thriller exploring extraterrestrial life, government secrecy, and the search for truth.
The film stars Emily Blunt, Josh O’Connor, Colin Firth, Eve Hewson, and Colman Domingo, and is set to open in Philippine cinemas on June 10.
Spielberg directed the film from a screenplay written by longtime collaborator David Koepp, who previously worked with the director on Jurassic Park, War of the Worlds, and Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.
According to Universal Pictures, Disclosure Day explores themes similar to Spielberg’s 1977 classic Close Encounters of the Third Kind, but through a more modern lens shaped by misinformation, political distrust, and questions surrounding humanity’s place in the universe.
“Wouldn’t it be wonderful for us to actually know that all of this is true?” Spielberg said, reflecting on the ideas that inspired the film nearly 50 years after Close Encounters.
The director said the movie examines “misinformation and the challenge of finding truth in a culture when powerful people have tools to blur the lines of fact and fiction.”
“It’s a movie that also asks questions about what we do with truth that expands our understanding of the universe,” Spielberg added.
Spielberg also described Disclosure Day as ultimately “a story about empathy as an extraordinary resource.”
The filmmaker said his fascination with extraterrestrial life dates back to childhood memories of watching meteor showers with his father in New Jersey.
“Overnight, I developed a real curiosity about what is happening up there in the stars,” Spielberg said.
While not a direct sequel to Close Encounters of the Third Kind, the new film revisits themes of alien contact, secrecy, and humanity’s reaction to the unknown.
The movie arrives as science fiction continues to see renewed interest globally, particularly stories dealing with artificial intelligence, government transparency, and unexplained phenomena.
Disclosure Day opens in Philippine cinemas on June 10.
