Metro Manila, Philippines — The government plans to replace 10 percent of its motorpool into electric vehicles (EVs) to save on fuel cost.

During the House ad hoc committee hearing on energy action on Tuesday, May 12, Budget Undersecretary Andrea Magtalas said the agency already supports EV procurement.

“A certain percentage of the fleets of government agencies are recommended to be electric vehicles. So as a policy, the DBM already supports the procurement,” she said.

The initial target is to shift a tenth of government vehicles to EV.

“We are reviewing the policy to ensure that there could be progression,” Magtalas said.

Lawmakers said costly fuel is affecting government operations, including police units.

Panel chairperson Miro Quimbo said police personnel have been complaining about expensive gasoline.

Officials cited the need to develop an e-marketplace to make EV procurement easier for agencies.
