Metro Manila, Philippines – Emma Thompson and Hugh Jackman headline the ensemble cast of The Sheep Detectives, a mystery-comedy set to open in Philippine cinemas on May 6.
The film follows a flock of sheep who set out to solve the murder of their shepherd, George, after finding him dead on his farm. The unlikely investigators are joined by a group of human characters, each with their own secrets and possible motives. Among them is Lydia Harbottle, played by Thompson, a lawyer tasked with reading George’s will, adding another layer of intrigue to the case.
The story unfolds in the fictional town of Denbrook, where suspicion falls on several characters, including George’s estranged daughter Rebecca, played by Molly Gordon, and innkeeper Beth Pennock, portrayed by Hong Chau.
Joining the investigation are a mismatched duo — police officer Tim Derry, played by Nicholas Braun, and aspiring journalist Elliot Matthews, portrayed by Nicholas Galitzine — who aim to solve the case while advancing their own careers.
Braun described his character as an officer seeking redemption. “Tim is driven by the need to prove himself to a town that sees him as an incompetent cop,” he said.
Galitzine said working on the film drew inspiration from classic buddy-cop dynamics. “The buddy-cop movie is one of my favorite genres,” he said.
Set against a pastoral backdrop, the film blends mystery and comedy, with the sheep at the center of the investigation as they attempt to uncover the truth behind their shepherd’s death.
The Sheep Detectives will be distributed in the Philippines by Columbia Pictures.
