Metro Manila, Philippines – Actress Liza Soberano addressed a wave of online apologies after netizens revisited her past remarks criticizing the entertainment industry’s love team system, following renewed debate sparked by a recent celebrity controversy.
Soberano took to X after users began messaging her to apologize for the backlash she received in 2023, when she described love teams as “dangerous.”
Many netizens cited the recent “WilCa” controversy involving Will Ashley and Bianca de Vera as an example of the pressures she had warned about, including blurred boundaries between on-screen pairings and real-life expectations.
“Why are people saying sorry to me? I’m so confused…” Soberano wrote, responding to the sudden shift in public sentiment.
A fan replied that she had been “canceled” for her comments only to be “proven right,” prompting the actress to clarify her earlier position.
“Well thank you I guess hehe,” she said.
“I never really got to expound on why I personally think it’s ‘dangerous’ to be in a love team so it makes sense people got offended. They didn’t fully understand where I was coming from,” she said
Soberano’s comments date back to an April 2023 interview on the “Get Real” podcast, where she spoke candidly about her experiences in the showbiz industry. She described how actors in love teams are often expected to portray couples both on and off camera and limit their professional opportunities to preserve fan interest.
“We’re supposed to be a real couple on and off cam,” she said at the time, adding that performers are often discouraged from working with other actors or openly clarifying their real relationship status.
She explained that this system can blur the line between personal and professional life, creating confusion not only for audiences but also for the artists themselves.
Soberano also noted that many love teams are not romantically involved in real life but are discouraged from saying so publicly, a dynamic she described as mentally and emotionally draining.
The actress, who was previously part of the popular “LizQuen” love team with Enrique Gil, has since pursued projects outside the traditional love team framework, including work in international film and television. Soberano confirmed her break up with Gil last year.
