Martial law survivors urge SC to uphold Imelda Marcos’ graft conviction

Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, November 9) — Martial law survivors trooped to the Supreme Court (SC) to appeal to the justices to affirm the Sandiganbayan’s ruling convicting former first lady Imelda Marcos of graft.

They also demanded the immediate release of one of the country’s oldest political prisoners, 84-year-old Gerardo de la Peña.

Samahan ng mga Ex-Detainees Laban sa Detensyon at Aresto or SELDA and Campaign Against the Return of the Marcoses to Malacañang or CARMMA led the protest.

In 2018, the anti-graft court found Mrs. Marcos guilty of seven counts of graft over $200 million ill-gotten wealth acquired through fraudulent private foundations in Switzerland.

They urged the justices to “assert criminal accountability” of the Marcoses and render justice to the Filipino people.

They also voiced their concern of possible repeat of the 1998 reversal of Marcos’ conviction on graft charges — and the dismissal of numerous forfeiture cases against the Marcoses and their associates.
