Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, October 13) — The Tony Award-winning musical “Miss Saigon” is heading to the Philippines in March 2024.
“I’m absolutely thrilled to be bringing my spectacular new production of Miss Saigon to Manila,\” producer Cameron Mackintosh said in a statement.
\”Without a doubt, it is the best production of Saigon I have ever produced, with one of the most brilliant casts that have ever performed the show around the world,\” he also said. \”I can’t envisage another show of this scale being done in Manila for the foreseeable future.”
GMG Productions said “Miss Saigon” will be staged at the Theater at Solaire, which recently brought another award-winning musical, “Hamilton,” to the Philippines.
GMG Productions chief executive officer Carlos Candal noted the deep connection Filipinos have with “Miss Saigon” as it provided a platform for artists like Lea Salonga, Jon Jon Briones, Joanna Ampil, and Rachelle Ann Go to showcase their skills and passion.
“Miss Saigon” is a retelling of Giacomo Puccini’s classic opera “Madame Butterfly.” Set up during the 1970s Vietnam, this follows the journey of young Vietnamese woman Kim amid the Vietnam War, who falls in love with an American G.I. named Chris.
Mackintosh’s production of Boublil and Schönberg’s classic musical first premiered in London’s West End in 1989. It has been seen by 38 million people around the world, and has been staged in 32 countries in 15 different languages for the past 34 years.
The new production of “Miss Saigon” opened in London in May 2014 and has since won nine Whatsonstage Awards.
The Manila staging comes after the musical’s successful run at the Sydney Opera House in Australia.
