Taguig residents flee homes, 10 hospitalized after ammonia leak

Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, September 25) – Residents of Barangay Lower Bicutan in Taguig City vacated their homes while 10 people were rushed to a hospital after an ammonia leak was reported on Monday.

According to the Taguig City Rescue and the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP), an ice plant along M.L. Quezon St. had an ammonia leak, which led a nearby school to suspend classes.

[Translation: According to one of the workers, while he was draining the oil pack, the pipe where the ammonia came from suddenly came loose. That’s where the leakage started. According to the report, since the pressure was strong, the pipe came loose from where the ammonia was.]

The investigation of authorities is ongoing, however Regalado said the pipe coming loose may be because the safety seal or lock of the pipe was not secured.

As of 9 a.m., the BFP declared that the ammonia leak has been successfully contained.
