Casiguran, Aurora scorches at 60°C heat index

Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, August 14) — The heat index in Casiguran, Aurora reached a record-breaking 60°C on Monday, according to the state weather bureau.

It is also the town’s fourth consecutive day with “extremely dangerous” heat indices of at least 53°C.The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) forecasts the Aurora town’s heat index to cool down to below 50°C in the next two days.

The country’s previous high was 53°C recorded on May 24 in San Jose, Occidental Mindoro.

Heat index is defined as the temperature that the human body feels when relative humidity is combined with the actual air temperature.

Temperatures of 52°C or more are considered to be in “extreme danger,” which means that heat stroke is imminent.

Meanwhile, 16 other areas logged heat indices ranging from 42°C to 45°C – classified under the “danger” level.

According to PAGASA, temperatures between 42°C and 51°C may cause heat exhaustion and cramps in some people as well as heat stroke if heat exposure is prolonged.
