Motorists urged to report license plate scammers

Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, August 13) – The Land and Transportation Office (LTO) is urging car owners to report individuals who promise hassle-free claiming of license plates for a ₱200 fee.

Libre po ito kaya I am asking our kababayan to immediately report to us kung sino ang nanghihingi ng pera para makuha ang kanilang plaka dahil sisiguraduhin ko mismo na mapaparusahan ang mga taong ito,” LTO chief Vigor Mendoza II said in a statement on Sunday.

[Translation: The claiming of license plates is free. That is why I am asking our countrymen to immediately report to us those who ask for money to claim their license plate because I will make sure they will be punished.]

Mendoza said the ₱200 fee will supposedly allow car owners to avoid long queues at LTO district offices and distribution sites.

Meron na po tayong mga inihandang sistema para maging maayos, at mabilis ang distribution process,” Mendoza said.

[Translation: We have prepared a system to make the distribution process smooth and fast.]

He added that LTO also plans distribute license plates in malls.

Mendoza said the LTO office Sorsogon and Naga City in Camarines Sur conducted a partial distribution of replacement plates on August 11.

The Department of Transportation launched a website to help car owners know if their new vehicle plates are ready for claiming.
