Norway cuts short Filipinas’ historic FIFA World Cup run

Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, July 30) – The Filipinas’ historic run at the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup was cut short after a 6-0 defeat against Norway on Sunday at the Eden Stadium in Auckland, New Zealand.

Norway bagged three goals in the first half of the match.

Opposition striker Sophie Haug scored the first goal, six minutes into the game.

Haug then doubled down and took the next goal via header from an assist from midfielder Vilde Risa.

Caroline Hansen earned Norway its third goal, 31 minutes into the first half.

In the second half, Norway took 2 more points.

At 48 minutes in, Filipinas’ defender Alicia Barker scored an own goal after an awkward bounce resulting from an attempt to intercept the ball from Norway.

Norway’s midfielder Guro Reiten then made a penalty goal at the 53 minute mark.

Meanwhile, 67 minutes in, the referee slapped Filipinas’ defender Sofia Harrison with a red card for excessive contact in a tackle against Norwegian Defender Thea Bjelde, ejecting the Pinay booter from the game.

Harrison had just substituted Striker Isabella Flanigan 10 minutes earlier.

The game was extended for 11 minutes, during which Haug scored a hat trick via header off a cross from Reiten.

The loss ended the Filipinas’ run in the group stages of the World Cup, barring them from the knockout stage.

In a historic upset, the Filipinas won their second game 1-0 versus host New Zealand after 27-year-old Sarina Bolden made a header off a cross from Sara Eggesvik, in the game’s 24th minute.
