Classes, gov’t work suspended in NCR on July 24 due to storm, transport strike

Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, July 22) – Classes in public schools and work in government offices in Metro Manila have been suspended on July 24 due to Tropical Storm Egay and the scheduled transport strike, Malacañang announced on Saturday.

“However, those agencies whose functions involve the delivery of basic and health services, preparedness/response to disasters and calamities, and/or the performance of other vital services shall continue with their operations and render the necessary services,\” a Palace memorandum read.

In its latest weather bulletin, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration said Egay has strengthened into a tropical storm and is expected to further intensify into a severe tropical storm in the next 24 hours.

Transport group Manibela earlier said drivers and operators in Metro Manila will hold a three-day strike starting Monday to protest the government’s public utility vehicle (PUV) modernization program, and its alleged failures to address the sector’s needs.
