NBI reshuffle possible after 6 personnel caught with Dera outside detention center

Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, July 7) — The Department of Justice (DOJ) said it is looking into reorganizing the security management section of the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) after some of its personnel were caught with a high-profile detainee outside the detention facility.

“An NBI shake up is definitely in order,” DOJ spokesman Mico Clavano told CNN Philippines’ The Source on Friday.

In June, Jad Dera, a co-accused of former Senator Leila de Lima in her drug case, was found in a van outside the NBI Detention Facility, along with six employees of the agency.

NBI security officer Randy Godoy, one of those who escorted the detainee, said his superior approved Dera’s trip to a hospital for a check-up.

He also said he and the other NBI personnel had dinner with Dera in Makati.

Clavano said the reorganization will mainly involve the NBI’s security management section, since all six employees were from this office.

Specifically, one of those caught by NBI agents was a permanent employee and the rest were job order employees.

The job order personnel were already terminated, while the security officer will have to go through a different process, Clavano said.

The head of the detention center of the NBI was earlier removed from his post following the incident.

Dera, meanwhile, was transferred to the Muntinlupa City Jail on Thursday, Clavano also said.

Dera admitted in a Senate hearing this week that he has slipped out of the NBI’s facility four times.

However, he said he did not bribe the officers who accompanied him

“This is something that cannot go left unsolved,\” the DOJ spokesman stressed. \”It shouldn’t happen that the six individuals caught with him are the only ones that will be penalized for such a serious incident.\”
