Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, June 29) — Award-winning Filipino actress Dolly de Leon is now a member of the Academy.
It was a plot twist for the “Triangle of Sadness” actress to be among the top-notch artists and entertainment industry standouts invited to join the prestigious Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
“This was never part of the plan,” De Leon said in an Instagram post of her name along with “Actors Branch” and a welcome greeting from the Academy.“So did I ever dream of this to happen? No. Did I ever even wish for it to happen? No. Because I never thought it could.”
The Golden Globes nominee expressed that her invitation to the distinguished group of industry professionals takes her closer to her goal.
“It’s happened and it’s a step closer to the goal and gives many others like me hope,” she said. “For those of you who dare to dream, know that nothing is impossible. Now it’s your turn. Laban!”
CNN reported on Thursday that the Academy has invited 398 artists and executives. Among them are Best Supporting Actor Ke Huy Quan of “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” 2022 nominees Austin Butler and Stephanie Hsu, and pop star Taylor Swift.
Upon finding out the good news, De Leon replied on Twitter, “Intense!✨”
To be invited, the personality must be sponsored by two members from the same field. Academy Award nominees are also automatically considered for membership.
The Academy cited that in the 2023 roster, 40% of the invitees identify as women and 34% belong to underrepresented ethnic and racial communities. There are 22 Oscar winners and 76 nominees among the 398 artists invited.
Members can vote in their respective categories and the best picture during the Oscars’ nomination stage. The 96th Oscars Awards ceremony is set to take place on March 10, 2024.
De Leon is currently working on upcoming dark comedy \”A Very Good Girl\” co-starring Kathryn Bernardo.
