Mayon unrest displaces over 14,000 Filipinos

Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, June 12) – More than 14,000 Filipinos are displaced as the country’s most active volcano spews lava, according to the latest update from the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC).

The volcano’s alert status is still at Level 3. No confirmed death nor injury has been reported at this time.

According to its 8 a.m. situational report on Monday, the NDRRMC said Mayon volcanic activities have displaced 14,376 individuals with around 3,900 affected families from 21 barangays in the province of Albay.

Alert Level 3 means the volcano has an increased tendency towards a hazardous eruption and potential explosive activity can occur within weeks or even days.

“Sana magkaroon ng restocking for IV fluids and medicines. We have to anticipate na baka magkaroon ng kakulangan or magkaubusan ng mga ito sa mga hospitals kung tatagal pa ang eruption ng Mayon,” the health officer said.

In response, Health Secretary Teodoro Herbosa has ordered the Department of Health-Center for Health Development to restock medical supplies and deploy more medical teams in evacuation areas.
