Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, April 18) — The Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) has procured medicines in preparation for summer-related diseases that prisoners might acquire, Spokesperson Jayrex Bustinera said Tuesday.

“Ine-expect ng BJMP na may surge ng skin diseases. Nagpapatraining din tayo ng staff natin para tugunan yung mga summer-related disease,” Bustinera said during the Laging Handa briefing.

The Department of Health (DOH) earlier noted that heatstroke and dehydration are common health conditions experienced during the hot summer season.

Skin diseases are also prevalent due to frequent sweating, DOH added.

The BJMP said it is coordinating with local government units in building more facilities to decongest existing jails.

The bureau earlier reported that the country’s jail congestion rate decreased to 370% from 600% in 2018.
