Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, April 11) — Sen. Risa Hontiveros on Tuesday renewed her call to overhaul the Bureau of Immigration (BI) after authorities reported a possible human trafficking case of a foreigner in the Philippines.
“Let’s overhaul the BI. Mukhang may contacts talaga sa loob (It appears they have contacts inside) going both ways,” she told CNN Philippines’ The Source.
According to earlier reports, authorities recently arrested two Chinese men for tricking a Vietnamese woman to work in the Philippines. Police said the suspects detained her and threatened to sell her to an offshore gaming company if her family did not pay the ₱300,000 ransom.
“Ito ngayon hindi na lang human trafficking sa labas, human trafficking paloob, dito sa Pilipinas bibiktimahin ang ibang Asyano,” Hontiveros said.
[Translation: This is not only human trafficking overseas, this is human trafficking on the country, other Asians are becoming victims in the Philippines.]
The BI on Monday called on authorities from the Ninoy Aquino International Airport to look into the possible links of airline personnel to human trafficking and illegal recruitment.
