Less than half of SIMs registered 2 weeks before deadline

Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, April 10) — More than two weeks before the deadline for SIM (subscriber identification module) registration, about 64 million users have already registered, which is less than half of the nearly 169 million users nationwide.

In its data accumulated on April 9, the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) recorded a total of 64,114,057 registered SIMs out of 168,977,773 SIMs.

The latest figure showed that DITO Telecommunity has 4,818,170 registered SIMs.

Globe Telecom Inc. has 27,257,428 and Smart Communications Inc. has 32,038,459 registered SIMs.

Earlier, DICT Undersecretary Anna Mae Lamentillo said the agency does not expect that all SIMs will be registered as some are used for mobile phone-aided criminal activities.

Malalaman natin after the period of registration kung ilan ba talaga ang nagagamit for legitimate and illegitimate purposes,” she said.

The SIM registration began on Dec. 27, 2022 under Republic Act 11934. Users have until April 26 to register their SIMs.
