PNP open to coordinate with Fortun to improve forensic examinations

Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, February 6) — Police officials have been asked to coordinate with forensic pathologist Raquel Fortun to improve the agency’s future autopsies.

Philippine National Police (PNP) Public Information Office chief Red Maranan said on Monday that Police Chief General Rodolfo Azurin has instructed the organization’s forensics group to get in touch with Fortun, particularly on the latter’s findings on the body of drug war victim Kian Delos Santos.

“Ang ating [Our] Chief PNP ay inatasan ang [ordered our] forensic group director to coordinate with Dr. Fortun para magkaroon sila ng [so they can have proper] coordination how to go about doon sa [the] findings,” Maranan said in a phone interview.

Following a re-autopsy on the body of Delos Santos, Fortun said she found lapses in the examinations conducted by the PNP and the Public Attorney’s Office (PAO) five years ago.

Last week, Fortun revealed that she found a bullet still lodged in the teenager’s neck—something earlier examinations apparently missed.

She also said the PNP Forensics Group only made an incision on Delos Santos’ body but did not examine the boy’s internal organs.

On PAO’s report, Fortun noted that it did not even identify which bullet wounds in the boy’s body were entry or exit points.

According to the PNP, the agency followed standard operating rules and procedures in its examination of the remains of Delos Santos in 2017.
