Marcos on Chinese New Year: Have compassion for the poor

Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, January 22) — President Ferdinand Marcos, Jr. asked Filipinos to show compassion to the poor as the country celebrates the Chinese New Year.

“May this auspicious day not only remind us of the blessings we have at hand, but also inspire us to exercise deeper compassion to those who have less in life,” Marcos said in a statement on Sunday.

“Truly, I am glad to begin this fresh chapter with you all – especially with our Filipino-Chinese communities in the country – in securing the good fortune, joy, and harmony that will be our guiding light in writing our shared history anew,” he added.

Marcos also called on Filipinos to work hand-in-hand and “be renewed with a sense of solidarity from which our hopes for a better tomorrow will spring forth.”

The president earlier announced that his meetings with Chinese businessmen during his trip to Beijing yielded a total of $22.8 billion (or over ₱1.2 trillion) in investment pledges. The commitments include $13.76 billion for renewable energy, $7.32 billion for electric vehicle and mineral processing, and $1.72 billion for agribusiness.
