Death toll from bad weather now at 30 — NDRRMC

Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, January 18) — The death toll from the bad weather experienced since Jan. 2 has risen to 30, disaster response officials reported on Wednesday.

In its latest monitoring, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) said 15 deaths have already been validated: seven from Eastern Visayas, five from Zamboanga Peninsula, two from Northern Mindanao, and one from Davao Region.

The NDRRMC also said 13 were injured while five remain missing, due to the nonstop rains that triggered floods and landslides.

The combined effects of low pressure areas (LPAs), the northeast monsoon or amihan, and the shear line also affected 387,433 families or 1,576,069 people in various parts of the country, mostly from Eastern Visayas.

According to the agency, over 41,000 families or more than 144,000 locals are still in evacuation centers.

It added that 257 areas are still flooded.
