
Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, January 17) — More than 21 million subscriber identity module (SIM) cards have been registered with the country’s major telco companies as of Tuesday, according to the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT).
The DICT reported that the latest tally of registrants translates to 12.5% of the 168.9 million SIMs in the country, citing data from the National Telecommunications Commission.
Smart Communications Inc. has filed 10.3 million SIM cards so far, accounting for 15.28% of its 67.9 million subscribers.
Globe Telecom Inc. had 8.9 million registered subscribers, accounting for 10.2% of its total of 87.8 million users.
Meanwhile, DITO Telecommunity Corp. has registered 1.7 million SIM cards, representing 13.57% of its 13.1 million subscribers.
SIM registration, as mandated by law, began on Dec. 27, wherein existing SIM card holders have six months to register.
Failure to register would result in the deactivation of the SIM card.
