Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, January 15) — Philippine bet Celeste Cortesi failed to enter the Top 16 of the 71st Miss Universe pageant held in New Orleans, Louisiana, USA Sunday morning (Manila time).
‘
The country’s placement streak also ended. It started in 2010 when Venus Raj placed 4th runner-up.
‘
Clinching the diamond-sapphire Mouawad crown was Miss USA R’Bonney Gabriel, a Filipino-American.
‘
Amanda Dudamel (Venezuela) and Andreína Martínez (Dominican Republican) were named first and second runners-up, respectively.
‘
The 25-year-old Cortesi competed with 83 candidates in the prestigious beauty pageant. Organizers said Norway could not compete in the finals night.
‘
The 71st Miss Universe pageant is the first edition under the franchise’s new owner Anne Jakrajutatip.

She showed elegance with her bedazzled yet subtle sky blue strapless gown crafted by renowned Los Angeles-based Filipino designer Oliver Tolentino.
‘
The beauty queen also turned into Filipina superhero and pop culture icon Darna during the national costume segment. The ensemble was made by Tolentino, with Jerome Navarro crafting the metalwork accessories.
‘
While the Pasay City-born Cortesi did not strut down the Miss Universe runway as a finalist, pageant expert Adam Genato earlier told CNN Philippines she trained hard for the question-and-answer portion.
‘
Cortesi was only six months old when her family moved to Parma, Italy. Her mother hails from Camarines Sur; her late father was Italian.
