DMW to craft new, ‘simplified’ rules for workers

Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, January 10) — The Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) will be crafting new and “simplified” rules for both land and sea-based Filipino workers as the government seeks to further streamline processes.

“Coming soon, new rules with ease of doing business as one of the guide posts,” DMW Secretary Susan Ople told a media briefing in Malacañang on Tuesday.

“Gusto sana namin iyong rules na iyon simplified and easy to read, hindi na kailangan ng abogado para maintindihan,” she added.

[Translation: We want to have rules that are simplified and easy to read, without the need for a lawyer to understand them.]

The previous protocols, according to Ople, were all published and formulated by the Philippine Overseas Employment Administration. She said the department will be having discussions with representatives of recruitment agencies to tackle the matter.

Meanwhile, the DMW chief bared that the Philippines has invitations for bilateral labor talks with a number of countries including Romania, Hungary, and Portugal.
