Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, January 9) — President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. on Monday said commuters can expect “better days” ahead, as his administration commits to invest more in the public transportation system.

He said this during the launch of the tunnel boring machine for the Metro Manila subway project, which the Office of the President said is seen to serve over 519,000 passengers daily once it becomes operational.

The Department of Transportation (DOTr) earlier announced the underground railway system is expected to accommodate 370,000 people daily in its first full year of operations.

“We can only look forward to better days after this recent development, as this project will be the first subway system in the Philippines. We take pride in its construction as a landmark event,” Marcos said during the event in Valenzuela City.

The president also asked for the public’s patience and “continued trust and support,” as he stressed that such a big-ticket project takes years to complete.

Authorities earlier said the subway is expected to be operational by 2028.

“We will continue to invest and improve on our transportation systems as well as pursue more projects in the years to come, so that Filipinos can gain greater access to places of work, commerce, recreation and other vital areas,” Marcos said.

Meanwhile, the chief executive thanked the Japanese government for partnering with the Philippines for the project as well as other infrastructure programs.

He expressed confidence that Japan’s expertise “will help us shape our railway infrastructure and keep them at par with the highest international standards.”
