Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, January 9) — Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) Secretary Benhur Abalos on Monday defended his appeal to top officers of the Philippine National Police (PNP) to submit their courtesy resignation to cleanse the institution of those involved in illegal drugs.
‘
“These are radical times, these are extraordinary times which call for radical and bold initiatives,” he told CNN Philippines’ The Source. “They’ve got so much money, power, and resources,” he added, referring to police officers engaged in drug dealing.

Abalos made the statement amid criticisms on his approach to go after erring police officers.
‘
He said it was a move that he thought carefully about, as it could also endanger his and his family’s security.
‘
So far, 60% or around 500 of 947 generals and full colonels have tendered their resignation, he noted. The deadline for the submission is by the end of January.
‘
Abalos said they are still discussing what to do with officers who will not submit their resignation.
‘
The DILG secretary said the process involves two parts, first is the evaluation of the over 900 PNP officers by the five-man panel, which will then submit its recommended list to the National Police Commission for further review.
‘
Abalos said if enough pieces of evidence are found, a criminal case will be pursued, otherwise, those found innocent will continue with their service.
‘
As for those who refused to resign but were found guilty, he said they also have plans, but declined to specify them.
‘
The whole process is expected to last for three months, he added.
