(CNN Philippines) — Selena Gomez finally speaks on why she has been out of the limelight for nearly two years, and it is far from the rehab rumors that was on everyone’s mind.
“I was diagnosed with lupus,” the pop star said in an interview with Billboard magazine.
She added she had been receiving chemotherapy while she was on break and not undergoing treatment for substance abuse as some speculated.
“I wanted so badly to say, ‘You guys have no idea. I’m in chemotherapy,'” she said.
In the interview, Gomez also addressed the hate she received as a public figure, saying that, while she had been nice to everybody, “everyone is so vile to me.”
She stated despite the fact that she had been working since she was seven years old and became a UNICEF ambassador at 17, she became a “tabloid story.”
She did, however, credit the negativity as the force behind Revival, her new album.
“The hate motivated me,” she said.
Gomez also denied that her new grown-up image was inspired by her breakup with her ex-boyfriend, Justin Bieber, saying, “This is all me.”
Gomez suprised people by posting a photo on Twitter in early September, one that seemed to show her in the nude.
