Shakey’s V-League: NU taints FEU’s record; Arellano, Ateneo knock down separate foes

Metro Manila (CNN Philippines) — The FEU Lady Tamaraws couldn’t leave the preliminary stage with a perfect record, as the NU Lady Bulldogs took control on Saturday (August 8) to sweep away the opposition in three straight sets, 25-23, 26-24, 25-19, in the Shakey’s V-League Collegiate Conference at the San Juan Arena.

The Lady Bulldogs were paced by the 15-point performance of Aleona Manabat.

In a game filled with closely contested sets, the Lady Tamaraws couldn’t seem to get one over the Lady Bulldogs, who managed to squeak by with the first two sets.

Riding the momentum of the first two sets, NU took home the victory after keeping FEU at bay and preventing an unlikely fight back.

Mary Remy Joy Palma led the Tamaraws with 10 points.

In the second game, the Arellano University Lady Chiefs needed four sets to get one over a spirited UP Lady Maroons side, 25-23,27-29, 25-23, 25-22.

Danna Henson shined for AU notching up 14 attacks, two blocks, and two service aces.

UP refused to go down easily, as they stole the second set and kept the other sets tight.

Unfortunately for the Diliman-based squad, the Lady Chiefs proved to be a match for their mettle, as they pegged them back at almost every turn.

The final game of the day saw the Ateneo Lady Eagles mangle a hapless Technological Institute of the Philippines side in three straight sets, 25-16, 25-14, 25-13.

Alyssa Valdez shined for Ateneo with 16 points.

The TIP Lady Engineers were simply outclassed by the Valdez led Lady Eagles, as the Katipunan-based side rained fire upon them.

This victory sees the Lady Eagles move on to the next round as the only undefeated team in the preliminary stage.
