
Metro Manila (CNN Philippines) – Neal H. Cruz, veteran journalist who was two-time president of the National Press Club, died on Tuesday (July 28) at the St. Luke’s Medical Center in Quezon City. He was 85.

Two weeks ago, Cruz slipped in his bathroom and hit his head, according to The Philippine Daily Inquirer, for which he had been writing a column, “As I See It,” since October 19, 1994.
He had surgery at St. Luke’s to remove a blood clot in his brain. He had to be operated on again two days later after doctors discovered fresh bleeding. Then on Tuesday, he died.

Cruz is survived by his wife Marina and children Doris, Dennis, Dinna, and Desiree, along with granddaughters Isadora Lyanne and Ma. Isabella.
His wake started on Wednesday at the Mount Carmel Church in New Manila, Quezon City.
Cruz, a native of Malabon, studied at the Malabon Elementary School and went to high school at the St. James Academy (Maryknoll).
Encouraged by Sr. Stephen Mary, his high school literature teacher, he enrolled at the University of Santo Tomas to take up journalism.
By his own account, he was able to complete his course due to a scholarship, supplemented by his monthly stipend of P30 from the Varsitarian, where he was literary editor, and his earnings from the freelance writing that he did for various national magazines.

After graduation, Cruz got hired as literary editor of This Week Magazine of The Manila Chronicle.
During the martial law regime of President Ferdinand Marcos he was managing editor of the Daily Express.
After the EDSA People Power Revolt, he served as editor-in-chief of various national broadsheet newspapers – Philippine Tribune, Philippine Herald-Tribune, and Philippine Daily Globe.
Outside of his newspaper work, he founded the Kapihan sa Maynila at the Manila Hotel with Pat Gonzales, former editor-in-chief of the Manila Bulletin who his publisher at the Philippine Tribune.

On leaving the NPC, he joined some colleagues in founding the Samahang Plaridel, an organization of journalists and media communications professionals.
In 2011, the St. James Academy Alumni Association honored him as one of its Outstanding Alumni: “For meritorious accomplishment in the field of journalism. A consumate writer and journalist, his literary works and journalistic discourses graphically articulate the moods and peculiarities of the times.”
