Packing 101: What not to bring on your next flight

Metro Manila (CNN Philippines) — The Department of Transportation and Communications’ (DOTC) Office for Transportation Security (OTS) released on Tuesday (July 14) an updated list of items that passengers aren’t allowed to bring when traveling via airplane.

Memorandum Circular 2015-02 or the Revised Prohibited Items List, which was issued late last month, applies to all flights originating within the country and adheres to standards set by the International Civil Aviation Organization.

According to the OTS, the revised list was created because of “evolving levels of threat affecting transportation security in the international and domestic level.”

Certainly not allowed

The following are the items that shouldn’t be in any of your baggage, whether it be hand-carry or check-in:

air guns

ammunition shells or bullets

bolt guns

components of guns and firearms

compressed air guns

firearms

flare guns

harpoon guns

nail guns

pellet guns

pistols

replicas or imitation firearms

revolvers

rifles

shotguns

spear guns

sport-related firearms

tear gas

Should be checked in

Other items, meanwhile, will be allowed on board planes as long as they are safely packed in checked-in or hold luggage.

Under Guns, Firearms, and Other Devices that Discharge Projectiles, items that should be checked-in are:

projectile-capable devices such as slingshots and crossbows

Under Stunning Devices, items that should be checked-in are:

acid spray

insect or animal repellent

mace or pepper spray

stun gun

All objects with sharp points and edges, on the other hand, are not allowed in cabin and are required to be “sheathed or securely wrapped to prevent injury to baggage handlers.”

The same rule would apply to workers’ tools and blunt instruments (except crutches or walking aids).

Liquid, aerosoles and gels

And when it comes to liquid, aerosoles and gels, passengers will only be allowed to bring them in individual containers. The capacity of these containers should not exceed 100ml. These containers should also be placed in transparent, resealable packaging.

According to the OTS, “only one transparent 20cm x 20cm resealable plastic bag shall be allowed” in the cabin for each passenger.

Exceptions to this rule are:

medications

baby milk or baby food

special delivery requirements
