Metro Manila (CNN Philippines) — We’re riding back into the danger zone, and Maverick is set to fly us in.
Twenty-nine years have passed since the original Top Gun film first hit the silver screen and five years since producer Jerry Bruckheimer has announced that a sequel is in the works, we now know more about the sequel of the iconic film.
Skydance Productions CEO and producer David Ellison shed more details on the project at a press conference for Terminator Genisys in Berlin.
“Justin Marks is writing the screenplay right now. He has a phenomenal take to really update that world for what fighter pilots in the Navy has turned into today,” said Ellison.
The story will still involve Maverick, a role that helped make Tom Cruise a household name all over America and beyond.
“There is an amazing role for Maverick in the movie and there is no Top Gun without Maverick,” said Ellison.
When asked whether or not Cruise will reprise the role, Ellison replied confirming that “it is going to be Maverick playing Maverick.”
Bruckheimer revealed that the sequel will revolve around the concept that pilots are now obsolete because of drones. According to Ellison, it is a piece that looks at a bygone era.
