Men, rejoice! It’s the age of ‘dad bods

Actor Leonardo DiCaprio poses in the winners room at the EE British Academy Film Awards 2014 at The Royal Opera House on February 16, 2014 in London, England.

(CNN Philippines) — Ryan Gosling’s six-pack abs can take a backseat for now as it is the time for the “dad bods” to take the center stage.

In this age of “fitspirations,” gym mirror selfies, and complicated detox diets, a new body trend for men has skyrocketed across the Internet: The “dad bod.”

Men thank God for the emergence of the dad bod.

The dad bod cuts men some slack by appreciating their non commitance to the gym tomorrow after they eat their way through a huge box of pizza and beers today. Repeat cycle.

Dad bod’s poster boy is no less than chunky and burly Hollywood actor Leonardo DiCaprio. Other actors proudly sporting the dad bod are Chris Pratt before he starred in Guardians of the Galaxy, Jason Segal, and Jon Hamm.

What exactly is a dad bod?

The term was brought to attention by 19-year-old student Mackenzie Pearson when she wrote a piece for her college paper entitled “Why Girls Love The Dad Bod.”

For Pearson, the dad bod is a nice balance between a beer gut and working out.

This excerpt from her piece published on March 2015 best explains how a dad bod looks and how it is achieved:

“The dad bod says, ‘I go to the gym occasionally, but I also drink heavily on the weekends and enjoy eating eight slices of pizza at a time.’ It’s not an overweight guy, but it isn’t one with washboard abs either.”

New York Magazine described the dad bod as a physique characterized by undefined muscles beneath a light layer of flab, usually topped off with a beer belly.

You get the picture.

The ladies seem to dig the dad bod.
