With the ‘ber’ months kicking in and the holidays drawing closer, our screens are lighting up with new films and shows to enjoy. This September, we look forward to the end of a great horror franchise, a gut-busting original Filipino comedy, a sweeping love story, and much more.

Whether you’re in the mood for laughs, scares, or tears, September has you covered. Here are our top picks for this month:

1. The Conjuring: Last Rites

The Warrens return for one final haunt. In 2013, The Conjuring launched an entire horror universe that gave us Valak the demonic nun and Annabelle the haunted doll. Nearly a decade later, the main franchise closes with “the case that ended it all” for the real-life ghost-hunting couple. This installment takes inspiration from the true story of the Smurls, a family who claimed their home was plagued by demons.
In cinemas September 3.

2. Kontrabida Academy

Get ready to laugh with the latest from Chris Martinez, writer of Ang Babae sa Septic Tank and Kimmy Dora. He reunites with Eugene Domingo in this new Netflix Philippines original. Barbie Forteza stars as Gigi, a woman whose life is falling apart. When things hit rock bottom, she is literally drawn into the world of a soap opera by its fierce kontrabida Mauricia (Domingo). Mauricia teaches Gigi how to be bad, bongga, and brave, just like the most iconic villains in teleserye history.
Streaming on Netflix September 11.

3. A Big Bold Beautiful Journey

Step into a romantic and fantastical world with stars Margot Robbie and Colin Farrell in what is sure to be an emotional, swoon-worthy film about two single strangers who meet under unique circumstances. Throughout the film, both characters walk through doors to visit important and life-changing moments from their past, reliving the big, bold, and beautiful journey of their life.
In cinemas September 17.

4. The Morning Show (Season 4)

Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon return for a fourth season of their hit drama The Morning Show. As two news anchors navigating an ever-changing industry, they face fresh challenges after Alex (Aniston) successfully negotiated a merger between their network and a rival news channel. This season, Oscar-winning actress Marion Cotillard joins the cast as the network’s new president.
Streaming on Apple TV+ starting September 17.

5. One Battle After Another

Acclaimed director Paul Thomas Anderson (Boogie Nights; There Will Be Blood) joins forces with megastar Leonardo DiCaprio for an action thriller unlike any of his past works. DiCaprio stars as Bob Ferguson, a former revolutionary who reunites with his comrades to rescue his daughter. Sean Penn, Benicio del Toro, and Regina Hall complete the powerhouse cast.
In theaters September 24.

And that’s not all. September also brings the Studio Ghibli Film Festival at SM Cinemas and an Ayala Cinemas-exclusive run of Lav Diaz’s Oscar contender Magellan. You’ll never run out of things to watch whether at home or on the big screen!
