Metro Manila, Philippines - Lav Diaz’s historical drama “Magellan” has been selected as the Philippines’ official entry for the Best International Feature Film category at the 98th Academy Awards in 2026.

The Film Academy of the Philippines made the announcement during the Philippine Film Industry Month celebration in Mandaluyong City on Monday, Sept. 2.

To support the movie’s Oscars campaign, Diaz’s team will receive a ₱1 million grant under the Film Development Council of the Philippines’ (FDCP) Oscars Assistance Program.

“Magellan” was chosen over six other contenders, namely "Food Delivery," "Green Bones," "Hello, Love Again," "Some Nights I Feel Like Walking," "Song of the Fireflies," and "Sunshine."

The film stars award-winning Mexican actor Gael García Bernal as Ferdinand Magellan, alongside Filipino veteran Ronnie Lazaro as Raja Humabon.

Set during the final months of the Portuguese explorer’s life, the movie had its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival in May, where it earned a five-minute standing ovation.

“Magellan” opens in Philippine cinemas on Sept. 10.

The Oscars’ international feature shortlist will be announced on Dec. 16 and final nominees will be revealed on Jan. 22, 2026.

The Oscars ceremony is set for March 15, 2026.
