Metro Manila, Philippines - The University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) has approved a rule change that will allow its eight participating schools to have two foreign student-athletes in their team pool beginning in Season 89.

UAAP Executive Director Rebo Saguisag, Jr. said that while only one foreign student-athlete may be part of the active roster, the teams will now have the option to keep a second foreign student-athlete on its reserve list.

“This was approved this year and, like all our rules, will take effect the following season—so starting UAAP Season 89,” said Saguisag. “For all sports, teams can have two foreign student-athletes in their pool, but only one can be part of the active roster at a time, with the other on reserve,” he said in a press conference on Monday, Sept. 15.

"This way, in cases of injuries—like what NU went through with Mo Diassana last season—there’s someone ready to step in,” he added.

Mo Diassana injured his knee during National University's first game last year against De La Salle University, leaving the Bulldogs without a foreign student-athlete for the rest of Season 87.

This rule will be applied to all UAAP sports.
