Tropical Depression Dante may intensify moving northwards
Metro Manila, Philippines - The low pressure area (LPA) over the Philippine Sea is now Tropical Depression Dante, with government meteorologists saying it may reach tropical storm category on Wednesday, July 23.
The fourth tropical cyclone this year came as parts of the country struggled with heavy rain and floods.
The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said “Dante” was spotted 1,130 kilometers east of Northern Luzon.
According to the latest forecast, “Dante” will move north northwestward over the Philippine Sea until Wednesday and exit the Philippine Area of Responsibility either Thursday or Friday.
It has center winds of 45 km per hour (kph) and gusts of up to 55 kph.
PAGASA earlier said it was also keeping an eye on an LPA near Basco, Batanes, and another outside the Philippine Area of Responsibility. Both have “medium” potential of developing into a tropical depression within the next 24 hours.
On Tuesday, the bureau alerted a number of localities of possible heavy rainfall:
Intense to torrential rains (>200 mm): Zambales, Bataan, Metro Manila, Cavite, Batangas, and Occidental Mindoro.
