Floods hit Manila on Monday, July 21 due to heavy rains brought by the southwest monsoon.

Metro Manila, Philippines - Classes at all levels and government work are suspended in Metro Manila and nearby provinces beginning 1 p.m. on Monday, July 21, due to heavy rains and flooding, Malacañang said.

The suspension covers the National Capital Region, Cavite, Rizal, Batangas, Laguna, Bulacan, Pampanga, Zambales, and Bataan.

“Those agencies whose functions involve the delivery of basic and health services, preparedness/response to disasters and calamities, and or the performance of other vital services shall continue with their operations,” the Palace noted.

Malacañang said it is up to private companies and offices if they will suspend work.

Several local governments have earlier declared class suspensions due to downpours and flooding brought by the southwest monsoon.

In the 24-hour forecast released at 11 a.m., the weather bureau said 100-200 mm of rainfall is expected over Metro Manila, Zambales, Bataan, Pampanga, Bulacan, Cavite, Batangas and Rizal.

Due to the bad weather, the government also offered free train rides on Monday afternoon.
