Metro Manila, Philippines - A military agreement between the Philippines and Canada has been concluded and is up for signature, the Department of National Defense (DND) said.

The Status of Visiting Forces Agreement (SOVFA) will create a framework for increased cooperation, pushing for closer collaboration between the two countries’ defense and military establishments and conducting joint exercises.

In a statement on Friday, March 7, the DND said both have concluded negotiations for the proposed SOVFA.

“This development underscored the Philippines' commitment to bolstering international partnerships and promoting regional security, thereby ensuring security and economic prosperity of both countries,” the DND said.

“The Philippines looks forward to the positive impact of the SOVFA, which is expected to contribute to peace, stability, and cooperation in the Indo-Pacific region,” it added.

The Philippines has a VFA with the United States and Australia, and a Reciprocal Access Agreement with Japan. Negotiations for a SOVFA with New Zealand have also been concluded.
