PH welcomes Slovenia's support for West PH Sea
Metro Manila, Philippines - The Philippine government has expressed appreciation for Slovenia's support of the 2016 Arbitral Award, which rejected China's expansive claims in the South China Sea and upheld the rules-based order in the West Philippine Sea.
In a statement, the National Maritime Council said Slovenia’s backing "reaffirms that we are not alone in our effort to uphold international law in the West Philippine Sea."
The council also noted that Slovenia, along with other like-minded nations, is closely monitoring China’s aggressive actions.
"The world is watching, and no amount of coercion or disinformation can distort the real issue of China's illegal, coercive, aggressive, and deceptive actions," the council added.
During a one-on-one interview with NewsWatch Plus, Slovenian Foreign Minister Tanja Fajon highlighted the significance of maritime law.
"We have our own history and are very aware of how important it is to respect international law and sovereignty in the sea," she said during her two-day official visit to Manila, the first by a Slovenian foreign minister.
"We strongly support the Philippines in the challenges it faces in the West Philippine Sea and South China Sea, and we are committed to upholding international law," Fajon emphasized.
She also stressed the importance of adhering to international tribunal rulings on maritime borders.
"It was very clear in 2016, as reflected in the arbitration award, which was unanimously adopted. We urge all parties to respect maritime law, sovereignty at sea, and international law," she said.
“We understand the challenges the Philippines faces because of our own history, and we remain committed."
